Volleyball Downs North Carolina Central in Four Games

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Kelsey Benorden recorded a career-high 24 kills to lead UNC Asheville to a 3-1 win over visiting North Carolina Central in collegiate volleyball action Tuesday night at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match, 27-30, 30-22, 30-20, 30-24.
Asheville's win improved its record to 2-8, while the Eagles fell to 7-6. NCCU was led by Shari Matthews with 17 kills and eight digs.
"I'm really pleased to get this win over a very good team in North Carolina Central," explained UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "We've been improving and tonight was another step in the right direction. We made some adjustments after the first game and found a way to get the job done."
Asheville had Alysha Greer with 13 kills as she hit .308 for the match. Benorden had a double-double with 24 kills and 16 digs. Raquel Miotto paced the Bulldog defense with 27 digs. Brooke Holliday contributed 15 digs.
The Bulldogs struggled with hitting errors in the first game as they made 17 and hit -.067. The Eagles took the lead midway through the game and held off several Asheville comebacks to win, 30-27.
Benorden took charge in the second game to start turning the match around. She had 10 kills in the game as the Bulldogs roared back to win the second game, 30-22.
In the third game, Asheville's blocking took over as the Eagles had 12 hitting errors. The Bulldogs jumped to a 19-8 lead and coasted from there to take the lead in the match, 30-20.
In the fourth game, NCCU led early but Benorden and Greer got the Asheville attack going as the Bulldogs built a 20-15 lead. The Eagles could get no closer than four points the rest of the game as a kill from Heather Burns ended the match.
UNC Asheville plays again this weekend in the Alabama State Invitational on Friday and Saturday.
