MONTGOMERY, ALA. ? UNC Asheville opened up play at the Alabama State Invitational with a 3-0 victory over the host school Friday morning. The Bulldogs won the match over the Hornets, 30-19, 30-9, 30-17.
Asheville (3-8) had a balanced attack in the Bulldogs first road win of the season. Freshman Kelsen Benorden paced Asheville with nine kills. Ashley Wrightenberrry finished with eight kills and hit .333 for the match. Sophomore Lauren Ficker added six kills, six blocks and nine digs in the win.
“Our serving was very good today and that opened up a lot of different things,” commented Asheville coach Julie Torbett. “We also did a solid job blocking and got a nice team effort. Overall, I was quite pleased with our effort. It's never easy to play at 9 a.m. in the morning but we came out focused and ready to play.”
UNC Asheville plays again today as the Bulldogs face Mississippi Valley State at 6 p.m. EST.
