MONTGOMERY, AL. - The UNC Asheville volleyball team finished unbeaten in the Alabama State Invitational with two more victories on Saturday. The Bulldogs roared past Alabama A&M and Southern in three games. Asheville won all four of its matches in the tourney over the weekend.
UNC Asheville won the first match over Alabama A&M, 30-27, 30-26, 30-14. The Bulldogs finished off the tourney with a 30-22, 30-18, 30-16 victory over the Southern Jaguars. Asheville downed Alabama State and Mississippi Valley State on Friday. The Bulldogs (6-8) have won five straight.
"We're very pleased to get out of here with four wins," commented UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. "We had to drive a long way to get here and play some opponents we weren't very familiar with. I thought we had a good team effort this weekend and we're starting to turn things around."
Kelsey Benorden led Ashevile in the A&M match with 13 kills, while Alysha Greer finished with 12 kills. In the Southern match, the Bulldogs hit .583 as sophomore Lauren Ficker was sensational with 12 kills and just one error.
"We really hit the ball against Southern," commented Torbett. "We found the places to get the ball in and put it all together. That was nice to see as it was our fourth match of the weekend but we still played well."
The Bulldogs play next at East Tennessee State Wednesday night at 7 p.m.
