Bulldog Women Fall to Top-Seeded Winthrop in First Round of Big South Tournament

RADFORD, Va. - The top-seeded Winthrop Eagles defeated No. 8 seed UNC Asheville, 4-0, in the first round of the 2007 Big South Women's Tennis Championship Thursday morning at the Dedmon Center Courts in Radford, Va.
Winthrop took the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3. The Eagles' Paty Coimbra and Antonija Bagaric defeated Leslie Smith and Tania Mateva, 8-0 at No. 2. At No. 3, Winthrop's Yelena Fadina and Larisa Bekmetova downed Sara Marie Holland and Rachel Pool, 8-0. The No. 1 flight of Winthrop's Ana Paula Noves and Paula Pereira and Louise Bottomley and Rachel Rhoney was unfinished with WU holding a 5-2 advantage.
In singles action, Noves defeated Smith, 6-1 at No. 1. At No. 2, Coimbra downed Bottomley, 6-2. Bagaric defeated Rhoney 6-1 at No. 3.
With the win, Winthrop improves to 9-14 overall and moves on to the semifinals were it will play the winner of the No. 4 High Point/No. 5 Liberty match at 11:00am on Friday, April 20. UNC Asheville's season comes to an end with a 6-11 overall record.
