RADFORD, VA. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis teams will open up play at the 2007 Big South Conference Tennis Tournament on Thursday at Radford University.

The men's squad is the sixth seed for the tournament and battles third-seeded Charleston Southern starting at 4:30 p.m. The Bulldogs are 6-10 on the season but enter the tournament with wins in six of their last eight matches. The only two losses were 5-2 defeats to Appalachian State and regular-season champ Winthrop.

"We're playing a little better," said UNC Asheville coach Larry Hubbard. "We'll need to play very well against Charleston Southern but if we play to our potential we have a chance to win."

The women's squad plays at 8:30 a.m. against top-seeded Winthrop. The Bulldogs are 5-11 on the year but like the men's team has played well in the final part of the year. Asheville has won five of its last seven matches and routed Lenoir-Rhyne, 7-0 last Friday.

"We'll have our hands full with Winthrop," stated Hubbard. "Winthrop has an excellent team that has had a great year but we're playing better. We're going to compete and give it our best shot on Thursday."
