ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville placed four players in double figures and used a late run in the second half to down visiting Campbell, 68-55 at Justice Center Wednesday night.

The Bulldogs (6-4) were led by Kyla Jones 13 points and four assists. Jessica Monroe chipped in 12 points, while Ashton Barton pumped in 11 points and grabbed six rebounds. Stacy Shepard finished with her second straight double-double with 10 points and 13 rebounds.

Campbell (4-5) was led by center Marlena Murphy with 13 points. Jessica Mack and Lauren Arthur finished with nine points each.

“This is a good win for us against a well-coached Campbell team,” commented UNC Asheville coach Betsy Blose. “We had to work for everything we got tonight. I liked our balanced scoring and everyone made a contribution. I thought our defense did a good job for the most part.”

The Camels were within 52-49 at the 5:38 mark on a lay-up from Mack. The Bulldogs responded with a 9-2 run to push the lead to 61-51. Jones scored the first four points of the run with a lay-up and two free throws to make it 56-49.

After Gina Bell scored inside to cut the lead to 56-51, freshman Kendall Shepard took a pass from Jones and knocked down a long three-pointer to give the Bulldogs their largest lead at 59-51. Ana Baker then converted a steal into a lay-up to give Asheville a 61-51 lead with 3:30 remaining.

The Camels could get no closer than eight the rest of the way as the Bulldogs won their second straight game.

The Bulldogs ended up out-rebounding Campbell, 42-39 after the Camels had a 30-22 advantage early in the second half. Asheville's defense forced 22 Campbell turnovers, 13 in the second half.

Kenall Shepard for Asheville went 3-of-3 from the three-point line for nine points. Baker had six assists and three steals.

The Bulldogs won despite having a tough night shooting from the free throw line. Asheville was 10-of-22 from the charity stripe for 46 percent. The home team shot 43 percent from the field for the game (26-of-61) but knocked down 50 percent of its shots (13-of-26) after intermission. Campbell shot 35 percent (20-of-57) from the field for the game.

The first half had seven ties and five lead changes. The Camels built a 28-23 late in the half on a lay-up from Murphy only to see Asheville score seven straight points to take a 30-28 lead. A trey from Kendall Shepard and buckets from Monroe and Barton gave the Bulldogs the lead. Murphy knotted the game at 30-30 with two free throws.
