ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? Coastal Carolina recorded 15 service and had Jill Nyhoff with 18 kills as the Chanticleers defeated UNC Asheville, 3-1 in Big South Conference volleyball action at Justice Center Saturday afternoon. CCU won the match, 30-18, 29-31, 30-27, 30-25.

The Bulldogs (8-20, 1-9 BSC) had their two-game winning streak snapped. Sophomore Alysha Greer led Asheville with 20 kills. Freshman Kelsey Benorden added 12 kills and 18 digs. Raquel Miotto contributed 17 digs.

Coastal Carolina (13-14, 5-4 BSC) had Megan Bickford with 16 kills. Bickford hit .433 for the match and added three blocks. Nakia Thompson picked up eight kills and six blocks.  Chelsy Kimes had 11 kills. Brett Starbuck had 24 digs and six service aces. Megan Pollard added 15 digs.

“We did not do a good job passing the ball today,” commented UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. “You can't give up 15 services aces and expect to win. I was pleased that we battled back in each game and gave ourselves a chance to win but we kept putting ourselves behind every game and that's hard to battle back.”

CCU controlled the first game from the start and cruised to a 30-19 win. The Bulldogs rallied in the second game and built a 22-17 lead only to see the Chanticleers come back and take a 23-22 lead. Asheville fought back, behind the serving of Bridget Holliday to battle to a 28-26 lead. CCU made one more rally to tie the game at 29-29 on a kill from Bickford. However, the Bulldogs got a point on a service error and a kill from Ashley Wrightenberry to even the match at 1-1.

The third game proved to be the difference as the Chanticleers rolled to a 20-13 lead only to see Asheville roar back and take a 25-24 lead on a service ace from Miotto. But Nyhof would get three kills and a big service ace from Bickford to help get the Chants to a 30-27 win to give CCU a 2-1 lead.

In the fourth game, Coastal Carolina sprinted ahead and took an 18-10 lead. Thompson had four kills and two of her blocks in the early run. Asheville tried to rally and closed to 28-25 as Greer had five kills in the Bulldog run. However, Bickford picked up a kill and a hitting error gave CCU the victory.

UNC Asheville hosts Radford this Friday night at Justice Center starting at 7 p.m. Coastal Carolina continues its road trip and travels to Winthrop Friday night for a showdown with the first-place Eagles at 7 p.m.
