Bulldog Volleyball Roars Past Charleston Southern, 3-1

ASHEVILLE, N.C. ? UNC Asheville picked up its first Big South Conference victory of the year Friday night with a 3-1 win over Charleston Southern at Justice Center. The Bulldogs won the match 28-30, 30-19, 30-25, 30-23.

 

Asheville (8-19, 1-8 BSC) had four players in double figures in kills. Alysha Greer and Kelsey Benorden paced the Bulldogs with 17 kills each. Lauren Ficker finished with 15 kills and four blocks. Ashley Wrightenberry contributed 12 kills and eight blocks. Raquel Miotto paced the defense with 25 digs. Benorden added 16 digs and three blocks.

 

Charleston Southern (9-16, 1-8 BSC) was led by Amanda Hill with 16 kills and 15 digs. Renae Popovich had a double-double with 13 kills and 10 digs. Ashlee Kadatz contributed 15 digs. Canan Erdogan had eight kills and six blocks.

 

“This is a great win for our team,” stated UNC Asheville coach Julie Torbett. “We've been playing better and tonight we really put things together to beat a well-coached and talented Charleston Southern club.”

 

The Buccaneers won the first game as they took charge midway through the game with an 8-2 run to lead 24-18. CSU, behind the hitting of Hill, built the lead to 29-24 only to see the Bulldogs make a dramatic rally and cut the lead to 29-28. But Popovich was able to seal the first-game win with a kill to make it 30-28.

 

Asheville took charge of the second game quickly and won going away, 30-19. The Bulldogs hit .351 in the game (16-3-37) and had five blocks. Greer had six kills in the second game.

 

Asheville kept the momentum up in the third game. Tied at 13-13, the Bulldogs went on a 7-0 run, keyed by Ficker's three kills and a block. Asheville led 20-13 and the Lady Bucs could get no closer than 28-24 as the Bulldogs won the game, 30-25.

 

In the fourth game, UNC Asheville went on an 8-2 run to pull ahead 22-16 and then coasted from there for the victory. Wrightenberry led the Asheville effort in the final game with five kills and five blocks.

 

The Bulldogs host Coastal Carolina Saturday afternoon at Justice Center starting at 2 p.m. Charleston Southern heads to Presbyterian on Saturday at 4 p.m.
