10.20.2007 | Women's Volleyball
HIGH POINT, N.C.? Alysha Greer and Rachel Guinane each posted season-highs but UNC Asheville fell 30-25, 19-30, 30-23, 30-26 at High Point on Saturday afternoon.
Greer had a team-high 17 kills and hit .234 on the match. It was her most kills since putting down 20 against UNC Greensboro on Sept. 2, 2006. Guinane had a career high 12 digs to go with 55 assists. Raquel Miotto matched her season-high with 29 digs. Both of her 29 dig performances have come against High Point.
Kelsey Benorden posted 15 kills and 21 digs while Lauren Ficker had 13 kills while hitting .465 and added six blocks for the Bulldogs who dropped their 11th straight match. UNC Asheville is now 6-19 and 0-8 in the Big South.
High Point (19-6, 5-2 Big South) had four players contribute double-figure kills. Ashley Johnson had 17 kills and Ashley Mellott had 16 kills. Audie Gonzalez posted a double-double with 14 kills and 21 digs. Lindsey Raus had 11 kills and Julie Heishkowitz had 21 digs.
"I thought we played very well today. We had a number of players with season high numbers we just have to learn how to win," said Asheville head coach Julie Torbett. "We had High Point on the ropes but they made key plays when they needed them. Teams who are winning find ways to win and you have to give High Point credit for that but I like the way our team fought back and I think we are close to turning the corner if we continue to play like we did today."
The two teams split the first two games with Asheville hitting .415 in the second game. The Bulldogs sided-out on 78 percent of their chances and made just one hitting error in game two.
In game three, the two teams played point for point until the Dogs went on a little run to take a 19-16 lead. High Point closed out the game with a 14-4 to take control of the match.
Miotto served three-straight points to give Asheville a 7-1 lead in game four. Once again, the Panthers were able to come back and tie the game at 21-21. HPU went on a 3-0 run to take a 24-21 lead. Asheville would get as close as 25-24, but the Panthers took five of the final seven points to win the match had sweep UNC Asheville in the season series for the first time ever.
Asheville out-hit High Point .225-.218, out-dug the Panthers 95-94, and out-blocked HPU 9-6, but High Point had 14 more kills in the match than the Dogs.
The Bulldogs will step out of conference on Tuesday and travel to Gardner-Webb before returning to the Justice Center on Friday, Oct. 26. That match will begin at 6 p.m. as part of Jammin' at the Justice.
