CHARLESTON, S.C. - McKenna Stockhausen scored two more goals to give her four this week as UNC Asheville defeated Charleston Southern 2-1 in Big South women's soccer action on Saturday.

A 30 mile per hour wind gave Asheville (7-6-2, 4-2-2 Big South) an advantage in the first half as the Bulldogs outshot the Buccaneers (5-10-2, 2-6 Big South) 11-2 in the opening period. The Bulldogs had nine shots on goal and a number of scoring opportunities but finally broke through in the 32nd minute. Lauren Wingo won a header at mid field on a short goal kick and passed a ball to Stockhausen at the top of the box. The freshman striker took a shot from 15 yards and beat CSU goalkeeper Mia Cederholm to the far post.

The Bulldogs had a chance to make it 2-0 going into halftime but Cederholm made the best of her eight saves in the 45th minute robbing Joy Haynes with a diving save.

Asheville went against the wind in the second half but still maintained much of the possession. In the 54th minute, Haynes sent a ball into the penalty area that has knocked down by the hand of a CSU player. The referee called the handball just outside the box. Stockhausen stepped up and buried the free kick from 18 yards into the back of the net for a 2-0 Bulldog lead.

Charleston Southern answered with its only goal 20 seconds after Stockhausen's tally. Off the kickoff, the ball was played into the Asheville half. Toni Interrant found the ball at her feet from 20 yards and sent a strike to the top of the goal. Asheville goalkeeper Veronica Lazar tried to punch the ball over the bar but could not get enough of the ball and Interrant made it a one-goal game.

Asheville had a number of chances to increase its lead in the second half. Stockhausen had a chance for a hat trick in the 70th minute when her shot beat Cederholm but hit the far post. In the 84th minute, Carly West touched a shot just over the crossbar from 12 yards.

"The wind made the game difficult for both teams but I liked the way we controlled play," said Asheville head coach Michele Cornish. "McKenna (Stockhausen) has been big for us the last two games and came through again today."

Asheville outshot CSU 20-6 in the match. Lazar was forced to make just one save as the Bulldogs who finish conference play at 5-2-2.

Both teams will not prepare for the Big South Tournament which begins next week at Coastal Carolina. Seedings will be announced by the conference office on Sunday.
