GREENSBORO, N.C. - Three UNC Greensboro pitchers combined for an eight-hit shutout and Brandon Harvey drove in both runs as UNC Greensboro defeated UNC Asheville 2-0 Wednesday night.
Clay Gibson threw 5.2 innings giving up seven hits, two walks, and struck out two to improve to 2-0 on the season. Clinton McKinney threw 2.1 innings giving up one hit and fanning two and Patrick Currin pitched a perfect ninth inning for his fourth save of the season.
Greensboro (12-18) got on the board with three straight two-out hits in the first inning. Guy Welsh, singled and scored on a RBI-single by Harvey.
In the third inning, Greg Feltes walked to lead off the inning. Welsh reached on catcher's interference. Both runners were sacrificed to second and third with one out when Harvey grounded to shortstop scoring Feltes from third base.
Asheville (13-16) had runners on base in each of the first eight innings and left 10 men on base. The Bulldogs were 0-8 with runners in scoring position in the game.
Tim Johnson (1-5) took the loss despite giving up just one earned run in 6.1 innings. He gave up two runs on seven hits and struck out five. Andrew Alexander threw 1.2 scoreless innings giving up one hit and striking out one.
Kevin Mattison went 2-for-4 in the game. He was stranded at third base in the first inning and at second base in the fifth. John Whited went 2-for-3 with a walk and was strained twice.
The Bulldogs best chance to score came in the sixth inning. Kyle Smith reached with a one out single. Whited was robbed on a diving catch by UNCG centerfielder Jermaine Mitchell. Joe Pellington followed with a single to left center that advanced Smith to third and Pellington took second on the throw to third base. UNCG made a pitching change and with two out McKinney got Rob Vernon to ground to shortstop to end the inning.
"This was a disappointing loss, "said Asheville head coach Willie Stewart. "We had plenty of chances but just could not get a two-out hit. Tim (Johnson) pitched well enough to win we just didn't give him any support tonight."
The Bulldogs return home on Friday to begin a three-game Big South Conference series against Charleston Southern. Friday's game is set for 3 p.m. at Greenwood Field and can be heard online at uncabulldogs.com.
