ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Elliott Arrington hit two home runs and drove in five runs as UNC Asheville downed defending MEAC champion North Carolina A&T, 13-2 at Greenwood Field Tuesday afternoon.
The Bulldogs (6-12), playing their first home game of the season, got a complete game from sophomore right-hander Graham Baughn (1-0). Making his first start of the season, Baughn limited the Aggies to two runs and eight hits. He struck out seven and didn't walk any in the victory. It was the first complete game for a UNC Asheville pitcher since Steven Cook tossed a complete game against Winthrop on May 20, 2004.
Arrington paced the 16-hit UNC Asheville attack by going 3-for-3 with two home runs, double and five RBI. Everyone in the Bulldogs line-up had at least one hit. Asheville scored at least one run in every inning but the second and fourth innings.
"We did a nice job hitting the ball today," commented Asheville coach Willie Stewart. "I was really happy with the way Graham Baughn pitched. He threw an outstanding game today."
North Carolina A&T (7-10) had eight players get one hit. Joe McIntyre and Raul Santiago had RBI-singles for the Aggies. Pitcher Patrick Oates (1-3) went 1-for-4 at the plate with a double.
The Bulldogs took the lead for good in the bottom of the first with two runs. The Aggies scored first in the top of the frame on a RBI-single from McIntyre. Arrington hit a two-run homer to push Asheville in front, 2-1.
The Bulldogs put three runs on the board in the third as Kevin Mattison drove in one run on a squeeze bunt, followed by a sacrifice fly from Brett Robinson. Arrington hit a solo homer over the center field wall for a 5-1 Asheville lead.
North Carolina A&T cut the lead to 5-2 on Santiago's RBI-single. Arrington got that run back with an RBI-double in the fifth to push the lead to 6-2.
John Watlington added an RBI-single in the sixth to pad the lead to 7-2 before the Bulldogs blew the game open with four runs in the seventh and two runs in the eighth. Mattison added a solo homer for Asheville.
Kyle Smith, Brett Robinson and John Whited all contributed two hits for the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs three homers on the day gives them a total of 20 for the season, matching their total for all of last season.
UNC Asheville hosts Furman Wednesday afternoon at Greenwood Field starting at 2 p.m.
