STATESBORO, Ga. - UNC Asheville scored five runs in the first three innings and then with stood a late Michigan rally to defeat the Wolverines 8-6 for its second straight victory to begin the Georgia Southern Invitational Friday afternoon.
Elliott Arrington went 3-for-5 with a pair of RBI to lead the Bulldogs (3-7) offensively. Asheville got on the board in the first inning. After Brett Robinson worked a two-out walk and moved to second on a balk, Arrington singled him home in front of a RBI double by Tony Wall. Wall would come around to score on a double steal with Kyle Smith to put Asheville up 3-0.
Michigan (2-3) scored a run in the top of the second. The Bulldogs responded in the bottom of the frame as Steve Burnich singled and came around to score on a RBI single by Robinson.
Kyle Smith hit a solo home run in the third to put Asheville up 5-1. The Wolverines added a run in the top of fourth inning.
Asheville added three more in the bottom of the seventh to go up 8-2. With one out, Kevin Mattison, Robinson, and Arrington each singled. Arrington's hit drove in Mattison. Rob Vernon walked to load the bases and John Whited delivered a two-RBI single.
Michigan scored twice in the top of the eighth on a two-run home run by Pickens. The Wolverines got two more in the ninth on RBI singles by Schmidt and Van Buskirk. With runners at first and third, Chris White struck out Recknagel to end the game.
Chris Nigro picked up the win for the Bulldogs throwing five innings giving up two runs on five hits.
The Bulldogs will throw Tim Johnson on Saturday against LeMoyne. Game time is 6 p.m.
