CONWAY, S.C. - Coastal Carolina placed four players in double figures and held off a determined UNC Asheville upset bid as the second-seeded Chanticleers downed the seventh-seeded Bulldogs, 78-62 in the quarterfinals of the Advance Auto Parts Big South Conference Tournament.
UNC Asheville (9-19) was led by Joseph Barber with 17 points, while Omar Collington and Chad Mohn had 10 points each. Mohn collected seven rebounds.
The Bulldogs led 42-40 at the half and were within four at 63-59 with less than four minutes left but were outscored 15-3 in the final three minutes. The Chanticleers advance to the semifinals for only the second time in the last 12 years. It was Coastal Carolina's 11th straight victory as the Chanticleers improved to 19-9.
"I was proud of our team tonight," stated Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach. "We battled hard and played our hearts out this evening. However, Coastal Carolina got some big offensive rebounds and we missed some free throws in the second half.
"Buzz Peterson (Coastal Carolina's head coach) has done a great job with this team this year, and we wish them the best of luck the rest of the way," added Biedenbach.
The Bulldogs battled back from an early seven-point deficit to take a 42-40 halftime lead as reserve forward Garrett Moles hit a jumper in the lane with 20 seconds left.
In the second half, Asheville went ice cold from the field but hung around and led 51-49 on a free throw from Holmes with 11:30 left. The Chanticleers took the lead for good on a 6-0 run to lead, 55-51.
The Bulldogs continued to battle and got to four at 63-59 on a jumper from Joey Harrell with 3:51 left.
But the Chanticleers were finally able to put the game away. Coastal Carolina got a trey from Leasure off a second shot and a dunk from Pele Paelay to get the lead 68-59. The Bulldogs could only get three points the rest of the game.
