GREENVILLE, S.C. - Elliott Arrington went 4-for-6 with two doubles, a home run, and three RBI to lead UNC Asheville to a 5-3 opening day victory at defending Southern Conference champion Furman Wednesday afternoon. The game lasted 11 innings.
With the Dogs trailing 3-1 in the eighth, Arrington hit his first collegiate home run to make the score 3-2.
Not to be outdone, freshman Edmund Locklear pinch hit to lead off the ninth inning and homered to tie the score at 3-3.
The game remained tied until the top of the 11th inning. Locklear was hit by a pitch and moved to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Steven Burnich reached on an error to put runners at first and third. Matt Henson hit an infield single to score Locklear. Arrington followed with his fourth hit of the day to score Burnich.
Furman put two on in the bottom of the 11th but Chris White (1-0) got Joey Rodgers out to record the victory in relief. White pitched three innings giving up two hits, walked one, and struck out three.
Butch Pucetas took the loss for the Paladins (0-1) and drops to 0-1. The Bulldogs out-hit the Paladins 12-7 and had four extra base hits in the game.
UNC Asheville (1-0) travels to Florida State this weekend to begin a three-game series on Friday at 5 p.m.
