CONWAY, S.C. - The Coastal Carolina men's basketball team led most of the way to pick up its first Big South Conference win of the season, defeating visiting UNC Asheville, 84-72, Monday night. With its seventh consecutive home win, the Chanticleers moved to 7-8 and 1-3 in the Big South while the Bulldogs dropped to 3-12 and 1-4 in conference action.
Freshman Michael Ellis, who replaced the injured Chad Mohn in the starting lineup, scored a career-high 28 points in his first career start. Ellis started the game by making his first nine shots.
The Bulldogs got the opening basket of the game off Joe Barber's jumper, but that was Asheville's only lead of the game. With the game tied at six, the Chanticleers went on a 17-1 run over the next 4:28 to take a 23-7 lead. The Bulldogs cut the lead to nine twice in the half, but the Chants held a 41-30 lead at the intermission.
"We played hard tonight but didn't play good enough on defense," Asheville coach Eddie Biedenbach said. "Coastal did a nice job of spreading us out, and as a result, got a lot of layups out of their offense.
"I'm not disappointed in the effort because it was outstanding, but we have to play smarter."
The Chanticleers had five players in double figures, led by Pele Paelay with 15, while Steven Sexton, Joseph Harris and Moses Sonko each scored 14.
Ellis finished the game by going 11-for-15 from the field and 6-of-9 from the free throw line. He also contributed six rebounds
Garrett Moles was the only other Bulldogs player in double figures, finishing with 10.
The Bulldos start a three-game homestand at 4:30 p.m. Saturday against VMI.
