ROCK HILL, S.C. - The UNC Asheville men's and women's tennis teams will compete in the Big South Conference Championships hosted by Winthrop this weekend. The tournament will run Thursday through Saturday at the Memorial Courts of the Winthrop Tennis Center.
The UNC Asheville men enter the tournament as the No. 4 seed after a 15-4 regular season. The Bulldogs were 3-3 in Big South matches and will face the No. 5 seed Radford in their first round match scheduled to begin at 11:30 a.m. on Thursday. The other men's matches have top-seeded Winthrop facing No. 8 seeded Coastal Carolina at 9:30 a.m. Second-seed Birmingham-Southern will face No. 7 seed Liberty at 2:30 and No. 3 seed High Point will face No. 6 seed Charleston Southern at 4:30 p.m.
The Bulldogs 15 wins in the regular season tied the school record for most victories in a season. A UNCA victory over Radford would not only set a new record but would set up a rematch against Winthrop on Friday. The Bulldogs gave the Eagles their closest match of the season before falling 4-3 earlier this season.
On the women's side, the Bulldogs will be the No. 6 seed and will face third-seeded Birmingham Southern at 4 p.m. Top-seeded Winthrop will face eighth-seeded Liberty at 9 a.m. Second-seeded Coastal Carolina will meet No. 7 seed Radford at 2 p.m. The final women's match-up is the No. 4 seed Charleston Southern face the No. 5 seed High Point at 11 a.m.
The Bulldog women completed an 11-6 regular season and went 2-4 in the conference. In the first match of the season, Birmingham-Southern defeated Asheville 7-0 with two of the matches going three sets.
The semifinals will be held on Friday with the Championship matches on Saturday. The women's final will begin at 9 a.m. with the men's final at 1 p.m.
