ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Both the Birmingham-Southern men's and women's tennis team won close matches on Wednesday to record a pair of Big South Conference wins over UNC Asheville Wednesday afternoon at the UNCA Tennis Center. The Panthers won the men's match, 5-2, while the women's team picked up a 7-0 victory.

In the men's match, BSC won the doubles point when the team of Mauricio Engler-Richard Turner edged the Bulldogs team of Julien Vulliez-Paul Ambrose, 9-8. The teams had split their other two matches.

In singles play, the Panthers won three three-set matches to pick up the victory. Paul Ambrose and Adam Branks both picked up victories for UNC Asheville.

In the women's match, BSC captured the doubles point and the won three singles matches in three sets to cruise to the victory.

"We just didn't win any close matches today," commented Asheville coach Chase Hodges. "We lost some really close three-set matches that if we could have won would have turned the matches around. Birmingham-Southern has two good teams and you just have to give them credit for picking up key victories."

The Bulldog men's squad dropped to 12-3 on the season and 2-2 in the Big South. The loss ended a seven-game winning streak. The UNCA women's team fell to 11-6 on the season and 2-4 in the league.
