Matthew Macon begins his fourth season with the UNC Asheville Swimming and Diving teams in 2024-25.
UNC Asheville's divers re-wrote their record book in 2023-24, with three school records and five freshman records being set. Macon also coached three ASUN Divers of the Week, with Morgan Coughlen earning honors twice (Nov. 14, 2023 and Dec. 19, 2023) and Jade Canady receiving honors on Oct. 10, 2023.
Macon's second season in 2022-23 saw the program records for 1M and 3M broken by Jade Canady, while Kindal Culpepper broke the school platform diving record. Macon's divers also set a program record in the team diving event. Macon coached two Coastal Collegiate Sports Association (CCSA) Diver of the Week award winners, and also coached the program to its first sweep over VMI and Cumberlands. Macon also served as the Diving Coaches representative on the CCSA Policy Committee.
In Macon's first season (2021-22), Morgan Coughlen broke both program and freshman records while also being the highest placer for Asheville at the conference championships with a 14th-place finish in the 1M.
Macon joined the UNC Asheville swimming & diving coaching staff in the fall of 2021. Macon will serve as the Bulldogs’ main diving coach under Head Coach Elizabeth Lykins.
“I am excited to join the UNC Asheville family,” said Macon. “I look forward to working with Coach Lykins and building a diving program that achieves the same success that our swimmers have found.”
Macon, a graduate of North Carolina State University, is no stranger to swimming & diving as he began swimming with a summer league in his early years before joining his high school and club teams that competed year-round.
Macon reconnected with the sport after a brief hiatus in 2017 when his step-child entered high school and joined the Asheville High School Swimming & Diving team.
Macon has spent the past five years working with high school swimmers and divers as a diving judge, meet referee, stroke and turn judge, along with serving as the Head Diving Coach at Asheville High School. During his stint in Asheville, all of his divers have qualified for regional competition and most have placed in the top 12 at the 3A State Championships.
“Seeing the interest and need for diving, I started a year-round dive club this past summer,” Macon added. “My goal with the club is to help foster divers I have worked with and to build the sport in Western North Carolina.”
