- Volunteer Assistant Coach
Matt Kelly joins the UNC Asheville staff for the 2021 season after serving two years as the head coach at Saint Thomas Academy in St. Paul, Minnesota. Kelly led the team to a 21-9 record in his first season (2019), including the school’s first-ever state championship. STA was top 10 in the state of Minnesota in ERA, team batting average, and team fielding percentage during that time. The 2020 season was canceled due to the CoVid-19 pandemic, but Kelly’s team still earned the academic all-state title with a 3.59 team GPA. In his two years as head coach, Kelly had seven players go on to play collegiately, including three NCAA Division-I commitments.Â
Prior to his coaching career, the Minnesota native was a catcher at Division-III University of St. Thomas in St. Paul from 2013-2015, including a Division-III World Series appearance in 2014.Â
Kelly’s responsibilities with the Bulldogs include working with catchers, outfielders, and hitters, organizing team travel, and directing all youth and prospect camps. He will also serve as the first base coach for the 2021 season.
