Sherman Leads Bulldogs Through Opening Round of Golfweek Red Sky Classic

WOLCOTT, Colo. – The UNC Asheville women's golf team opened play at the Golfweek Red Sky Classic on Monday, with the Bulldogs carding a 16-over 304 through the opening 18 holes at Red Sky Golf Club.

Asheville sits in 19th place following the first round of the three-day event. The tournament is being played on the par-72, 6,383-yard Fazio Course.

Carly Sherman led the way for the Bulldogs on Monday, firing a 2-over 74 to sit tied for 58th individually. Sherman found success on the par-3s throughout the round, playing the four par-3 holes at 2-under and averaging 2.50 strokes.

Breanna Hoese followed Sherman with a 4-over 76 and enters Tuesday's second round tied for 78th. Praelyn Jirasaraikul and Kate Bennett each carded rounds of 5-over 77 and are tied for 86th. Bennett also finished 1-under across the course's par-3 holes.

Rounding out Asheville's lineup was Jordyn Arts, who finished the opening round at 11-over 83.

As a team, the Bulldogs recorded 46 pars and 11 birdies during Monday's opening round. Asheville played the par-3 holes at 4-over, while finishing the par-5s at 1-over.

Southern California holds the team lead following a record-setting opening round where the Trojans fired a 22-under 266, setting a Golfweek Red Sky Classic single-round scoring record. Miami sits second at 11-under, while Texas A&M is third at 10-under.

The Bulldogs return to Red Sky Golf Club on Tuesday for the second round of the Golfweek Red Sky Classic. The three-day tournament concludes Wednesday.
