Angelina Joy Hug Named Big South Conference Player of the Week

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Tennis junior Angelina Joy Hug has been named the Big South Conference Player of the Week, announced by the league today (Wednesday, Mar. 4).

Asheville went 2-0 this week with a 4-3 win over UNC Greensboro and a 5-2 win over North Carolina Central.Â

Against UNCG, Angelina Joy Hug teamed up with Sofia Segui to beat Sydney Bly and Sofia Somoano 6-4 at No. 1 doubles before Hug clinched the match at No. 1 with a 4-6, 7-6 (8-6), 7-5 win over Sophia Cedeno.

In the match against North Carolina Central, Hug and Segui dropped their No. 1 doubles match before Hug would eventually clinch the match in singles play with a 7-6 (7-5), 6-1 at No. 1 over Alejandra Hidalgo.

"Ang delivered in a big way for us last week, clinching both matches in dramatic fashion!" said head coach Jeff Maren. "She showed incredible leadership skills, and an ability to handle adversity and put the team first! I'm very proud of her!"
This is Hug's fourth career Player of the Week honor. The Murten, Switzerland native is a health and wellness promotion major.Â

The Bulldogs (6-3, 1-0 Big South Conference) return to action on Friday (Mar. 6) at Western Carolina. First serve is set for 2:00 p.m. from Cullowhee, N.C.
