Asheville Women's Tennis Sweeps Big South Conference Weekly Awards

CHARLOTTE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Tennis has swept the Big South Conference's weekly awards this week, announced by the league today (Wednesday, Mar. 18). Junior Angelina Joy Hug has been named the Player of the Week, while Maria Sol Alvarez Brandon has been named the Freshman of the Week.

Asheville went 2-1 over Spring Break in Florida with a 5-2 win over St. Thomas (Fla.), a close 4-3 loss to Navy and a 4-1 win over Quinnipiac.Â

Hug went 1-1 in doubles play teamed up with Sofia Segui at No. 1, while going 3-0 at No. 1 singles over the course of the week. She and Segui picked up a 6-2 win over St. Thomas (Fla.) for their win in doubles play. Hug went on to pick up a 6-2, 6-1 win in singles against St. Thomas (Fla.), a 6-1, 3-6, 1-0 (10-6) win against Navy and a 4-6, 6-2, 10-6 win in the match against Quinnipiac.

This is Hug's fourth career Big South Conference Player of the Week honor. The Murten, Switzerland native is a health and wellness promotion major.

Brandon went 1-2 on the week with Avery Sager at No. 3 doubles, picking up a 6-2 win in the win over Quinnipiac. Brandon also went 2-0 in singles play at No. 5 singles earning a 6-2, 7-5 win against St. Thomas (Fla.) and a 6-1, 2-6, 6-2 win against Navy.

This is Brandon's first career Freshman of the Week honor. The Buenos Aires, Argentina native is a political science major.

"Ang and Sol played solid tennis last week and are deserving of these awards!" said head coach Jeff Maren. "I loved their grit and ability to handle the pressure moments well! I look forward to watching them compete for the rest of the season!"

The Bulldogs (8-5) return to action on Saturday (Mar. 20) to host Longwood in Big South Conference action. First serve is set for 10:00 a.m. from Asheville School.
