Four Score in Double Figures in Win at Charleston Southern on Wednesday

CHARLESTON, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball saw four Bulldogs score in double figures in a 60-48 win at Charleston Southern on Wednesday (Feb. 4).

Asheville scored 15 points in the first quarter holding Charleston Southern to just eight for a lead headed to the second. After the teams stayed scoreless through about three minutes, the Bulldogs found their rhythm for a 13-3 run to force a Charleston Southern timeout. Charleston Southern scored five of the quarter's final seven points as the teams headed to the second.

Asheville proceeded to push its lead further, winning the second quarter 20-12. The lead fluctuated as the Bulldogs led by seven at the media timeout, before a push from Asheville would push their lead to double-digits for the final six-plus minutes of the quarter. The Bulldogs led 35-20 at the half.

Charleston Southern won the third quarter 16-13 as Asheville's lead was cut to 12 headed to the fourth. The Bulldogs were able to stretch their lead to as many as 15 in the quarter. Each team would score 12 points in the fourth quarter to bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 35.7 percent (20-56) from the floor, 38.5 percent (5-13) from three-point range and just 62.5 percent (15-24) from the foul line. Asheville outscored Charleston southern 20-18 in the paint, 6-0 on second chances and 17-4 off the bench in the contest while also scoring four points off turnovers and five points on fast breaks. Nia Green led the scoring effort with 14 points, while D'yanna Maxey had 12 points and Jamaria Freeman and Kristen McMillan each had 11 points in the game. Aileen Marquez added five points in the game, while Deborah Orianegbena had four along with two from Journee McDaniel and one from Trinity Fields. Asheville out-rebounded Charleston Southern 52-33, led by a game-high 10 boards from McDaniel while Green also had seven rebounds in the game. Orianegbena and McMillan each had six rebounds in the game, while Maxey had five and Marquez had four. Freeman also grabbed three rebounds, while Fields had one. Fields paced the Bulldogs with two assists in the game, while Green, Freeman, Orianegbena, McDaniel, McMillan and Marquez each had one helper in the game.
