800 Free Relay Team Shines on Day Three of ASUN Championships

ORLANDO, Fla. - UNC Asheville Women's Swimming and Diving saw the 800 free relay team shine on the third day of the Atlantic Sun Conference Championships on Friday (Feb. 21). Asheville remains in fourth place in the team standings.

The quartet of Anna Marcotti, Roberta Marchesi, Gianna Riffel and Beatrice Cocconcelli swam the second-fastest 800 free relay in school history with a time of 7:25.98 to take fifth place in the event. The Bulldogs totaled four lifetime-best times and one season-best time on the evening. Gracie Hunt finished 24th in the 100 back in 58.43, while Gracelyn Cox finished 10th in the 100 breast in a lifetime-best time of 1:03.28. Cocconcelli (1:04.68, 17th) and Miriam Wheatley (1:05.74, 23rd) also swam the event. Alessia Cunegatti posted a 15th-place finish in the 200 fly in a lifetime-best 2:06.73, while Rose Sciaudone finished 18th in a lifetime-best 2:07.51. Tess Peny also completed her collegiate career finishing in 20th in a season-est time of 2:08.55.

Seven Bulldogs punched tickets to the finals, with three lifetime-best times and one season-best time. Cox punched her ticket to the B final in the 100 breast in 1:04.22, while Cocconcelli (1:05.65) and Wheatley (1:05.72) each earned spots in the C final. Cunegatti earned a spot in the B final of the 200 fly with a lifetime-best time of 2:07.15, while Sciaudone (2:07.79) qualified for the C final in a lifetime-best time and Peny (2:09.57) earned a spot in the C final in a season-best time. Hunt earned a spot in the 100 back C final in a lifetime-best time of 57.18. Taylor Smith (1:06.66) also swam the 100 breast, while Andie Quisumbing (2:11.98) also competed in the 200 fly.

"I am so proud of all of my amazing Bulldog teammates!" said senior Tess Peny. "Watching all of their hard work pay off is one of my greatest joys. I could not have finished my last conference meet without their support. I can't wait to cheer them all on for one last amazing day tomorrow!"
