Bulldogs Fall at High Point

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team traveled to High Point on Thursday (Feb. 19) and fell to the Panthers, 74-48.

DJ Patrick led all scorers with 17 points, knocking down five 3-pointers. Myles Mayfield was Asheville's second-leading scorer with 11 points and grabbed six rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Daniel Thomas pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds, while Toyaz Solomon finished with nine points, five rebounds, and four blocks.

Asheville recorded 10 team blocks, with seven of the nine Bulldogs who saw action registering at least one rejection. The Bulldogs' 10 blocks marked their first double-digit total since recording 12 against VU Lynchburg on Nov. 18, 2023. The last time Asheville posted double-digit blocks against a Division I opponent was at Georgia State (10) on Nov. 20, 2022, and the last time it happened against a Big South opponent was March 1, 2014, against Gardner-Webb (12).

ON THE COURT

It was a slow start offensively inside the Qubein Center, with High Point holding a 5-3 lead at the first media timeout. Asheville led just once, following a Mayfield free throw in the opening minutes, but High Point maintained the advantage for the remainder of the game.

Two separate triples from Patrick trimmed the Panthers' lead to one before the second media break, as High Point carried a 12-11 edge into the under-12 timeout. Out of the break, the Panthers used an 8-0 run to hold the Bulldogs scoreless past the under-8 media timeout. With under five minutes remaining in the half, High Point pushed its lead to double figures and went into halftime ahead, 32-19.

High Point maintained a double-digit advantage throughout the second half to secure the ESPNU victory.

IN THE BOX

  • Asheville shot 31.6 percent from the field (18-of-57) and 22.7 percent from 3-point range (5-of-22).
  • High Point shot 42.9 percent (27-of-63) and went 6-of-29 (20.7 percent) from beyond the arc.
  • The Panthers finished 14-of-18 from the free-throw line, while Asheville went 7-of-13.
  • Both teams grabbed 15 offensive rebounds. High Point totaled 27 defensive boards, while Asheville finished with 21.
  • High Point forced 16 Asheville turnovers while committing eight and outscored the Bulldogs 17-6 off turnovers. The Panthers also recorded 11 steals compared to Asheville's three.
  • Asheville held the edge in blocks, 10-4.
  • High Point outscored Asheville in the paint (42-22), in second-chance points (12-10), in fast-break points (11-9), and in bench scoring (24-11).

UP NEXT

The Bulldogs (12-15, 6-7 Big South) return to action Saturday (Feb. 21) in Kimmel Arena, hosting Radford at 4:30 p.m. following the women's game at 2 p.m. as part of the university's Homecoming doubleheader.

The Big South Trophy Tour will also stop in Asheville on Saturday.
