BOILING SPRINGS, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer continued its best league start of the program's Division I era with a 4-0 shutout of Gardner-Webb Saturday night (Oct. 3). The Bulldogs move to 4-0-0 in Big South Conference play with the win, and have also recorded three straight shutouts for the second time in as many seasons.
The teams spent most of the first half trading runs, possession and chances in each other's ends. Asheville would break through for the first half's only goal in the 28th minute, when Campbell Stoll made a run through the midfield and played a ball forward to an open Lili Adams. Adams took a touch to corral the pass and then fired a rocket to the top shelf for her ninth of the season and 11th of her career with Stoll picking up her fourth assist of the season and eighth helper of her career.
Three second half goals for Asheville would create some separation and also bring the match to its final score. Just five minutes into the half, Adams created a turnover deep in the Gardner-Webb end before finding an open Lilly Graumann. Graumann beat the Gardner-Webb keeper low for a 2-0 lead and her sixth goal of the season and ninth of her career, with Adams collecting her second assist of the season and second helper of her career on the play.
Asheville outshot Gardner-Webb 17-10 in the match including 10-5 in shots on frame, while earning three corner kicks in the contest. Gib, Schreier and Benz each had three shots in the match to pace the offense, with Gib and Schreier each matching their career-highs and Benz recording a new career-high. Landyn Wessels and Adams each registered two shots in the match with Wessels matching her career-high, while Stoll, Arna Hogarth-Scott, Graumann and Haydan Erck each logging one shot in the match. London Phoenix (7-3-2) made five saves in her fourth clean sheet of the season and her third consecutive shutout on the year.
The Bulldogs (7-3-3, 4-0-0 Big South) return to action next Saturday (Oct. 10) hosting Longwood for Alumni Day. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
