ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Soccer punched its ticket to the Big South Conference tournament with a 2-1 second half rally over Winthrop Wednesday night (Oct. 28) at Greenwood Field.
Â
The teams traded runs, possessions and chances throughout the first half, with Winthrop outshooting Asheville 7-4 and earning three corner kicks to Asheville's one in the opening half. Despite the back-and-forth action, the match went to the break scoreless. Along with the action on the pitch, the first half did feature a short bear delay as bears were spotted near the field in the final 15 minutes of the first half.
Â
Winthrop broke the ice less than two minutes into the second half, when Monssi Avila-Gutierrez converted a penalty kick for her fifth of the season and a 1-0 Eagles lead. The teams would play more of the same as the first half, continuing to trade time in each other's offensive halves. The Bulldogs were finally able to get a ball through the middle to Lili Adams in the 72nd minute, who ripped a low curling ball to the low left corner that dinged off the goal post and bounced back out across the box. Adams didn't give up on the play, beating her defender to the ball and playing the ball back across the box. Her cross found the foot of Alex Gib. Gib stashed it home for her third of the season and second game-winner of the year along with the third goal of her career.
Â
Asheville totaled 11 shots in the match, including four on target and three corner kicks. Adams paced the offense with three shots in the match, while Georgia Duke and Kandis Calvin each had two shots in the contest. Gib, Lilly Graumann, Schreier and Arna Hogarth-Scott each had one shot in the match for Asheville. London Phoenix (8-4-3) stopped seven shots in the victory.
Â
The Bulldogs (8-4-4, 5-1-1 Big South Conference) travel to Charleston Southern on Sunday (Nov. 1) for the regular season finale. Kickoff is set for 1:00 p.m. from Charleston, S.C. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com. Â

Adams would pick up her fourth assist of the season and of her career as the teams were deadlocked with less than 20 minutes to play. The Bulldogs would take their first lead just five minutes later, when Haydan Erck found space on the far wing and crossed the ball into the box. The ball bounced through a crowd and found Manuela Schreier, who beat Winthrop's keeper low right for the game-winner in the 77th minute. The goal was Schreier's fourth of the season and fifth of her career as well as her first career game-winner, while Erck picked up her third assist of the season and seventh helper of her career.72' | It's the equalizer 🫨 Alex scores from LA and we're tied! #ALLinAVL https://t.co/uIr6Gipvy0
