Men's Soccer Drops Non-Conference Tilt at No. 23/9 Wake Forest Tuesday Night

10.13.2026 | Men's Soccer

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer dropped its non-conference tilt at No. 23/9 Wake Forest Tuesday night (Oct. 13) by a score of 3-1.

The teams traded runs, chances and possession throughout the first few minutes of the match, before Wake Forest would break through for the match's first goal in the 15th minute. Ronnie Garcia fed a ball down the near wing to a running Alfred Debah, who then sent a ball back across the box to a streaking Tate Lorentz. Lorentz would stash home his fourth of the season on a sliding attempt through the box just beating an Asheville defender. Asheville would outshoot Wake Forest 6-5 in the opening half, and also earn two corner kicks while holding the Demon Deacons off the corner flags in the period before Wake Forest took its lead to the half.

After roughly 12 minutes of play in the second half, a ball coming out of the Wake Forest end was disrupted and a turnover was forced by Kayoum M'Bamba. M'Bamba then turned up field, made a move past a defender and fed Ian Smith on the near wing who crossed the ball into the box. The cross found the head of Tyler Ware, whose header dinged off the crossbar and bounced in for the equalizer in the 68th minute. The goal was Ware's 11th of the season and 18th of his career, while Smith picked up his third assist of the season and fourth of his career. M'Bamba also picked up his sixth assist of the season and of his career on the play. Wake Forest would secure the victory with two goals in the 87th minute just 20 seconds apart.

Asheville totaled 10 shots in the match, including four on net along with each team recording a pair of corner kicks. Ware, Woody Angell and Taichi Nogami each paced the offense with two shots in the match, while James Davies, Matteo Samori, Louie Salkeld and Smith each registered one shot in the match. Lucca Barros (8-3-1) made five saves between the pipes in the contest.

The Bulldogs (9-3-1, 3-1-0 Big South Conference) return to action on Sunday (Oct. 18) at Radford in Big South Conference action. Kickoff is set for 4:00 p.m. from Radford, Va. with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
