Rally Falls Short for Women's Basketball at Radford on Friday

RADFORD, Va. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball saw its rally fall short at Radford on Friday (Jan. 23) in a 64-52 loss inside the Dedmon Center.
 
Asheville scored 15 points to Radford's 12 in the first quarter, holding a lead headed to the second quarter. The teams played to a 6-6 deadlock through five minutes and change, before Asheville went on a 5-2 run with back-to-back buckets from Nia Green and a three-pointer from Aileen Marquez. The teams traded buckets in the final two minutes before heading to the second.
 
The teams played a low-scoring, defensive second quarter that saw Radford score 13 points while holding Asheville to just six points. Radford led 25-21 at the half.
 
Radford out-scored Asheville 25-15 in the third quarter as the Highlanders took a 50-36 lead to the fourth.
 
Asheville out-scored Radford 16-14 in the fourth quarter, getting back within 50-49 at the halfway point of the quarter. Marquez began the run with a triple, before Green knocked down a pair of free throws and then scored a bucket several possessions later. Green would continue her run of three straight scores to get the game back within three, before hitting another pair of free throws to cut the deficit to one just past the halfway point of the quarter. Radford ended the game on a 13-3 run to bring the game to its final score.
 
Asheville shot 35.1 percent (20-57) from the floor, just 26.7 percent (4-15) from long range and 88.9 percent (8-9) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Radford 16-12 off the bench, while also scoring six points off turnovers, 22 points in the paint, six points on second chances and 10 points on fast breaks in the game. Green scored a career-high 24 points to lead the Bulldogs matching her career-best 9-20 field goal shooting, while matching her career-high six made free throws. Green completed her fifth double-double of the season with 10 rebounds in the game. Marquez also scored 12 points on four made three-pointers, while Journee McDaniel added eight points and Deborah Orianegbena and Kristen McMillan each had four points. In addition to Green's game-high 10 boards, Orianegbena pulled down seven rebounds while McDaniel also had five. Marquez grabbed four boards in the game, while McMillan also had three. Jamaria Freeman and Clementina Odom each had one rebound in the game. Freeman led the way with three assists in the game, while Green had two and Marquez and Taliya Council each had one. Marquez paced the team with two steals, while Green, Orianegbena, D'yanna Maxey and Odom each had one swipe in the game. Green also registered two blocks in the game for Asheville.
