Men's Soccer Falls in Conference Opener at USC Upstate

SPARTANBURG, S.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer fell in its Big South Conference opener at USC Upstate by a score of 4-0 on Saturday (Sept. 20). Â

The teams traded runs throughout the opening half, before Upstate was able to apply some pressure late in the half. In the 36th minute, Lucas Bergfors fed Henry Burt who opened the scoring for a 1-0 Spartans lead. The Spartans would take their lead to the break, as they outshot Asheville 4-3 in the opening half and earned both of the period's corner kicks.

Upstate started fast in the second half, when Oskar Kaufman scored from Vitalis Takawira Jr. in the 49th minute for a 2-0 lead. The pair would hook up again in the 54th minute to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead. Upstate added a goal in the 88th minute to bring the match to its final score.

Asheville totaled eight shots in the match with four on goal, to go along with four corner kicks. Brede Fiksdal and Rodrigo Mendes each had two shots in the match, with Fiksdal setting a new career-high. Charlie Wood, Lennart Granzow, Benian Yao and Dylan Culbertson each had shots in the match for Asheville. Lucca Barros (4-2-1) made two saves between the pipes in the match.

The Bulldogs (4-2-1, 0-1-0 Big South Conference) return to action on Tuesday (Sept. 23) to host California in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m. from Greenwood Field, with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
