Volleyball Sweeps The Citadel to Split Day One of Queens Fall Classic

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – UNC Asheville volleyball went 1-1 on Friday (Sept. 12) at the Queens Fall Classic in Charlotte, N.C. The Bulldogs dropped a 3-1 decision to Campbell on Friday morning before sweeping The Citadel Friday evening.
MATCH AGAINST CAMPBELL
The Bulldogs (2-7) fell by set scores of 16-25, 15-25, 25-21, and 22-25. Baylor Herlehy led Asheville at the net with 10 kills on a .375 hitting percentage while also tallying three solo blocks and two block assists. Albertine van der Goot also led Asheville with a team-high 11 kills on a .269 hitting percentage. Setter Payton Rolfsen paced the offense with 23 assists and six digs. Defensively, Michelle Thao recorded a team-high 15 digs, while Kylie Cackovic added seven digs and six kills.
After dropping the first two sets, the Bulldogs responded with a strong third frame. Asheville hit .355 in the set behind 14 kills, five from van der Goot, to secure a 25-21 victory.
The fourth set was tightly contested with Asheville trailing 22-23, but Campbell closed out the match with back-to-back points.
MATCH AGAINST THE CITADEL
UNC Asheville volleyball put together one of its sharpest outings of the season on Friday evening, sweeping The Citadel in straight sets (25-23, 25-16, 25-12).
The Bulldogs hit an impressive .371 as a team while holding The Citadel to just .170. Asheville committed only eight attack errors across three sets and controlled the match behind steady serving and a strong defensive presence at the net.
Cackovic led the charge with a dominant performance, tallying 16 kills on .500 hitting to go along with eight digs and an ace. Ana Djurovic added 13 kills at a .423 clip and chipped in seven digs, three block assists, and two service aces.
Setting duties were split, with Selina Koç dishing out 21 assists and eight digs, while Payton Rolfsen contributed 13 assists. Baylor Herlehy was effective at the net with six kills and a team-high six block assists. Defensively, Michelle Thao anchored the back row with 12 digs.
UNC Asheville's serve kept The Citadel on its heels, finishing with seven aces from six different players. At the net, Asheville posted nine total blocks.
The match featured seven ties in the opening set, but Asheville closed strong with back-to-back points to win 25-23. From there, the Bulldogs took control, hitting .333 in the second set and an impressive .531 in the third to seal the sweep.
Asheville is back on the court tomorrow (Sept. 13), as the Bulldogs face Queens at 1:30 p.m.
