UNC Asheville Statement on the House vs. NCAA Settlement

06.11.2025 | General, Athletics News

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – UNC Asheville Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone released the following statement regarding the House vs. NCAA Settlement:

"At UNC Asheville, we are dedicated to providing a comprehensive and holistic student-athlete experience for every Bulldog on our campus. As we strive to Dream Bigger and Achieve More, the revenue generated by our athletic department is essential for enhancing and sustaining various aspects of our program, including scholarships, sports medicine services, mental health resources, and more. At this time, opting into the House Settlement would not be advantageous for our long-term success. Our current intention is to opt out for the 2025-26 year, and we will continue to assess the situation as it develops."

What does opting out mean?

Revenue Sharing:
Under the settlement, schools have the option to distribute a portion of their athletics-related revenue to student-athletes as compensation. Institutions that choose not to participate would forgo access to this funding.

Roster Limits:
The agreement introduces new limits on team roster sizes. Schools that opt out would not be required to follow these restrictions.

Clearinghouse:
Regardless of participation, all schools must still adhere to certain parts of the settlement, such as complying with a centralized clearinghouse for NIL (Name, Image, and Likeness) agreements.

NIL Impact:
Student-athletes will still have the right to engage in NIL deals even if their school opts out. However, the school could not provide direct NIL compensation to the student-athletes.

Supporting Bulldog Athletics

The best way to support UNC Asheville Athletics annually and make an impact on every team is by donating to Bulldog Club, the primary unrestricted fund of UNC Asheville Athletics. For more information on how to give, contact Director of Athletics Janet R. Cone at jcone@unca.edu or (828) 251-6922.
