Women's Basketball Drops Conference Tilt at Longwood Saturday Night

Longwood began the quarter with a 7-2 run in the first few minutes, before Asheville would counter with a 10-7 run to end the quarter as the teams went to the second tied 12-12. Alana Swift scored five points in the quarter including tying the game with an old-fashioned three-point play to end the frame.

Longwood controlled the second quarter from start to finish, winning the frame 26-12 to take a 38-24 lead to the half.

Asheville used a big third quarter to get back in the game, outscoring Longwood 19-11 in the period as they trailed just 48-43 headed to the fourth. Asheville went on a 12-2 run to get back within four with Dakota McCaughan forcing a Longwood timeout with a triple at the end of the run. Free throws from LaImani Simmons and Skylar Bailey got the Bulldogs back within three in the final minute, before Longwood scored the final two points of the quarter at the free throw line.

Asheville put on a furious rally in the fourth quarter scoring 16 to Longwood's 19, but the Bulldogs came up just short.

Asheville shot 33.3 percent (19-57) from the floor, 30.4 percent (7-23) from long range and 93.3 percent (14-15) from the charity stripe in the game. McCaughan scored a team-high 15 points while Swift added 13 off the bench and Abigail Wilson also added eight. Bailey had seven points in the game, while Simmons had six and Taylor Wilkins had five. Trinity Barnes scored four points in the game, while Deborah Orianegbena also had one. Orianegbena led the team with eight boards in the game, while Wilson had six and McCaughan and Swift each pulled down five. Wilkins grabbed three rebounds in the game, while Jazlyn Ware and Simmons each had two and Bailey also had one. McCaughan finished the game just one off her career-high with six assists in the game, while Swift had four and Wilkins, Ware and Barnes each delivered one. McCaughan, Wilson and Simmons each registered two steals in the game, while Bailey, Swift and Barnes each had one. Wilson and Sydney Burris each posted one block in the game. Â
