Mary Ann Myers to Receive 2025 Trailblazer Award from UNC Asheville Athletics

02.19.2025 | General, Athletics News

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Asheville Athletics supporter Mary Ann Myers will receive this year's Trailblazer Award from UNC Asheville Athletics, announced today (Wednesday, Feb. 19) by the athletic department.

"Whether as a student-athlete at Owen High School and Miami (Ohio) University, a college coach, a State Farm Fraud Investigator, or now working with underserved youth through the Asheville Tennis Association, Mary Ann has demonstrated a passion and work ethic that epitomizes being a Champion and Servant-Leader",  said UNC Asheville Athletic Director Janet R. Cone. "We are thrilled to recognize her as our 2025 Trailblazer Award Recipient."

A native of Asheville, Myers played tennis on the Owen High School boys' team in the late 1970's. Additionally having a passion for basketball, she would go on to play at Miami University in Ohio before joining the collegiate coaching ranks. In her 10-year coaching career, she spent time at UNC Asheville, Ashland University (Ohio) and Iowa State. After her coaching career, she worked as a fraud investigator for 24 years. She is a member of both the Owen High School Hall of Fame and the Miami University (Ohio) Hall of Fame, and her No. 20 jersey is retired at Miami. She earned educational merit awards in 2023 for tennis both from the state of North Carolina and the United States Tennis Association, and is also the current President of the Asheville Tennis Association.

After 35 years away from the tennis court, Myers reconnected with the sport thanks to a neighbor. She is an active member at both the Asheville Racquet Club and Aston Park and is also an avid supporter of the Bulldog tennis programs. She also teaches tennis in the after-school program with the City of Asheville.

Myers will receive the award at the Our Turn To Play event on Apr. 29, 2025 at UNC Asheville's Kimmel Arena. For tickets, please contact Donna Peek at dpeek@unca.edu.
