McCaughan Scores 600th Career Point in Loss to Charleston Southern

02.15.2025 | Women's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - Senior guard Dakota McCaughan scored her 600th career point in UNC Asheville Women's Basketball's 60-51 loss to Charleston Southern on Homecoming Saturday (Feb. 15) inside Kimmel Arena.

Asheville started the game on a 7-0 run to force a quick Charleston Southern timeout with a jumper from Taylor Wilkins, a three-pointer from Abigail Wilson and another jumper from Wilson just two and a half minutes in, before the teams crossed the halfway point of the quarter with Asheville leading 9-3. Asheville pushed it's lead to 10 with two minutes to play in the frame, before ultimately taking an 18-11 lead to the second.

Charleston Southern won the second quarter 17-15, while Asheville took a five-point lead to the half. Asheville would stretch the lead to 10 again in the second, before Charleston Southern would chip away at the lead with Asheville leading 33-28 at the break.

Unfortunately it was a tale of two halves for the Bulldogs, as Asheville was held to 10 points in the third quarter and just eight in the fourth quarter as Charleston Southern completed the comeback.

Asheville shot 33.9 percent (20-59) from the field, 28.6 percent (6-21) from long range and 71.4 percent (5-7) from the foul line in the game. Asheville outscored Charleston Southern 22-18 off the bench, while also scoring 14 points off turnovers, 16 points in the paint, two points on second chances and four points on fast breaks. Wilson paced the Bulldogs with 15 points, while LaImani Simmons added 13 points off the bench. McCaughan added six points in the game, while Deborah Orianegbena had five points and Jazlyn Ware and Trinity Barnes each scored four points. Skylar Bailey and Wilkins each had two points in the game. Orianegbena paced Asheville on the glass with 10 rebounds for her fourth double-digit rebounding effort of the season, while Wilson had five boards and Ware and Wilkins each had four. Simmons grabbed three rebounds, while McCaughan and Barnes each had one. Simmons dished out a career-high five assists in the game, while McCaughan had four and Wilson added three. Wilkins also added two helpers while Ware had one. Wilkins and Sydney Burris each had one steal in the game for Asheville.

The Bulldogs are back at Kimmel Arena on Wednesday (Feb. 19) to host Radford in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. with video, live stats, audio and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
