Bulldogs Protect Downtown in Win Over UNCG

12.02.2025 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team moved to 2-0 this week inside the Harrah's Cherokee Center – Asheville, defeating UNC Greensboro 82-77 on Tuesday night.

The Bulldogs (4-4) used a dominant second half to overcome the Spartans after UNCG led by three at the break (39-36). At the buzzer, Justin Wright buried a 3-pointer to pull Asheville within three heading into halftime. UNCG held the lead for over 19 minutes in the opening frame and built its largest advantage at eight points before Wright's late triple trimmed the margin.

Out of the break, Asheville opened the second half on a 9-0 run to take a 45-41 lead—an advantage the Bulldogs would not relinquish the rest of the night.

UNCG managed to tie the score twice before Asheville responded with a decisive 12-1 run to build a double-digit cushion. The Bulldogs led by three possessions or more for nearly the entire final 10 minutes, though back-to-back Spartan 3-pointers cut the margin to three with less than a second left. DJ Patrick was fouled on the ensuing inbound and sank both free throws to seal the five-point victory.

For the second straight game, four Bulldogs scored in double figures, led by Toyaz Solomon, who posted 20 points—15 of which came in the first half. Seven of his points came before the first media timeout. Solomon finished 7-of-13 from the field with one 3-pointer and went 5-of-9 at the line.

DJ Patrick totaled 19 points and played all 40 minutes, shooting 5-of-9 from the floor, 4-of-8 from deep, and 5-of-6 from the stripe. He shared the team lead in rebounds with Kameron Taylor, as each grabbed five boards.

Taylor and Justin Wright each finished with 18 points. Taylor scored 15 of his in the second half, going a perfect 6-of-6 from the field and 3-of-4 at the line. Wright shot 7-of-12 overall and a perfect 3-of-3 from behind the arc. Both Taylor and Wright led Asheville with three assists apiece, and Wright added a team-high two steals.

Statistically, the teams were nearly identical. Both shot 15-of-21 at the free-throw line. UNCG went 10-for-23 from 3-point range, while Asheville hit 9-of-18. From the field, the Bulldogs finished 29-of-56 compared to UNCG's 26-of-49. Rebounding was tight as well, with the Spartans holding a slight 27–26 edge. Asheville recorded a season-low eight turnovers while forcing 11, converting those into a 13-6 advantage in points off turnovers. The Bulldogs also outscored UNCG 32-30 in the paint and 12-7 in second-chance points.

Asheville relied on a short bench, with just three reserves seeing action and combining for three points. UNCG's five bench players combined for 29 points.

The Bulldogs return to action on Saturday (Dec. 6), traveling to Raleigh to face NC State at 1 p.m.
