Miami Edges Bulldogs in Overtime, 90-87

12.10.2025 | Men's Basketball

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville men's basketball team closed regulation on a 13-2 run to force overtime on Wednesday night, but the Bulldogs' late surge came up just short as Miami (OH) escaped Kimmel Arena with a 90-87 victory.

Tonight's contest marked the first overtime game in Kimmel Arena since Jan. 25, 2023, and the first overtime loss at home for Asheville since Nov. 28, 2020.

Despite the setback, Asheville (4-6) recorded double-digit 3-pointers for the fourth time this year—five of which came from Toyaz Solomon. The Bulldogs also matched their season high with 30 defensive rebounds.

Solomon turned in a standout performance, finishing with a career-high 31 points on 11 made field goals and five 3-pointers, each also career bests. He added six rebounds, two assists, two blocks, and went 4-of-5 at the free-throw line.

Justin Wright followed with 26 points and matched his career high with eight assists. He shot 10-of-18 from the floor, 3-of-5 from beyond the arc, and 3-of-6 from the charity stripe.

DJ Patrick reached double figures with 12 points, including a perfect 6-of-6 from the free-throw line—a career high in makes—while adding four rebounds. Myles Mayfield rounded out Asheville's double-digit scorers with 10 points and posted career highs of seven rebounds and three assists.

Kameron Taylor narrowly missed a double-double, finishing with eight points, eight rebounds, and a career-high five assists before fouling out with 10 seconds remaining in regulation.

As a team, Asheville shot 48.4% from the field (30-of-62), 45.5% from 3-point range (10-of-22), and 77.3% at the foul line (17-of-22). Miami shot 50% from the floor, 38.5% from three, and 75% at the line. The RedHawks (9-0) placed five players in double figures.

Asheville built an early six-point lead with 12:09 left in the first half, but five minutes later, Miami had surged out to a 30-20 lead, and the RedHawks remained ahead for the rest of the half. The Bulldogs chipped away late in the period as a Solomon 3-pointer and a step-back jumper from Wright helped cut the deficit to six at halftime, 41-35. Solomon and Wright led Asheville at the break with 12 points each.

Out of the break, Miami used the first 10 minutes of action to resecure a double-digit lead, and the RedHawks earned their largest lead of the night at 18 points with 9:17 remaining (70-52). The RedHawks held a double-digit advantage until Wright knocked down a 3-pointer with 4:12 to go, trimming the gap to nine. Solomon later hit two free throws and followed with a 3-pointer to make it a six-point game (82-76) with 2:48 left.

Patrick sank four free throws, and a Wright layup brought Asheville within one (83-82) with 45 seconds remaining. After Mayfield knocked down two free throws to give the Bulldogs an 84-83 lead, Miami's Peter Suder tied the game at the line with 23 seconds left. Asheville had a look at the game-winner but could not convert, sending the contest to overtime.

Solomon opened the extra period with a jumper, and a Wright free throw pushed the Bulldogs ahead 87-84. However, those would be Asheville's final points, as Miami closed the final minutes on a 6-0 run to seal the win.

The Bulldogs return to Kimmel Arena on Saturday (Dec. 13) to host St. Thomas at 2 p.m.
