Women's Basketball Battles, Falls at Furman on Saturday

GREENVILLE, S.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball battled, but fell at Furman on Saturday (Nov. 29) by a score of 74-67.
 
The Bulldogs scored the first points of the game, before Furman embarked on a 17-3 run through the first six minutes of play. Asheville started to find its rhythm offensively in the last three minutes of the quarter, but Furman led 24-12 after 10 minutes of play.
 
Asheville got the game back within single digits early in the second quarter, before Furman responded and held its double-digit lead into the final three minutes of the quarter. Asheville responded with a run in the last two minutes to cut the deficit to four at the half. A layup by Nia Green and a triple from Aileen Marquez cut the deficit to six, before a pair of Furman free throws got the lead back up to eight. Free throws from Green and a jumper from D'yanna Maxey closed the half and Asheville trailed just 36-32 at the break.
 
Asheville rallied to take a brief lead in the third quarter, staying within four points through the first six and a half minutes of the period. A triple from Kristen McMillan gave Asheville it's first lead since 2-0, before Furman closed the quarter on an 18-3 run to take a 61-47 lead to the fourth.
 
Asheville scored 20 points in the fourth quarter while holding Furman to 13, but it was not enough when the final horn sounded. Asheville made a late push in the last two minutes with Marquez knocking down back-to-back triples, but that would be all for the Bulldogs.
 
Asheville shot 40 percent (22-55) in the game from the field, 47.6 percent (10-21) from three-point range and 59.1 percent (13-22) from the foul line. Asheville outscored Furman 15-13 on fast breaks, while each team scored 19 points off the bench. Asheville scored 16 points off turnovers, 18 points in the paint and 10 points on fast breaks.  Marquez paced the Bulldogs with a game-high 20 points on a career-high six three-pointers, while Green put up 15 points and McMillan added 11 points. Jamaria Freeman added seven points, while Deborah Orianegbena had six and Maxey added four. Kamaria Gipson and Trinity Fields also added points in the game. Marquez, Maxey and McDaniel each had five rebounds in the game, while Green, Freeman, Orianegbena and McMillan each had four boards in the game. Jaidyn Koerdt also had two rebounds in the game, along with one from Fields. Freeman and Fields each had four assists to pace the offense, while Green and McDaniel each had three. Marquez added two helpers in the game, while Maxey also had one. Marquez and Freeman each had two steals in the game, while Maxey, Fields and McDaniel each had one. Green matched her career-high with three blocks in the game, while Marquez also had one.
 
The Bulldogs return to action next Wednesday (Dec. 3) to face South Carolina State for the annual Education Day game sponsored by Tanger Outlets. Tip-off is set for 11:30 a.m. from Kimmel Arena with video, live stats, radio and tickets available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
