Bulldogs Fall in Tough Road Contest to Longwood

01.08.2025 | Men's Basketball

FARMVILLE, Va. – Despite four Bulldogs finding their way into the double-digit scoring column Wednesday evening, the UNC Asheville men's basketball team suffered a 76-85 loss on the road to Big South Conference foe Longwood.

It was back-and-forth in the opening minutes of the midweek contest, with Asheville earning a 3-point lead after trailing by one following a layup from Jordan Marsh and a jumper from Fletcher Abee (8-5). Longwood responded with the following four points to retake a one-point lead before a successful trip to the free throw line, and a 3-pointer from Josh Banks helped put the Bulldogs ahead by four (13-9). The Bulldogs would remain ahead over the next two minutes before the Lancers tied the game at 17 and took a two-point lead with 12:25 remaining in the opening half.

Back-to-back dunks from Jemal Davis and Kameron Taylor helped Asheville regain the lead 23-22, and a successful trip to the charity stripe from Taylor helped the Bulldogs extend their lead to three. A 3-pointer from Banks put Asheville ahead 30-24, giving the Bulldogs their largest lead of the half with 8:29 to go. Asheville led for the next six minutes until a putback from Longwood's Elijah Tucker evened the score at 40. The Lancers went on to take the lead and did not allow Asheville back out in front for the rest of the half, but Asheville did not allow Longwood to extend their lead past three points, and Longwood entered the second half ahead 46-45.

Longwood quickly went to work extending their lead out as the second half began, as the Lancers opened the half with a 3-pointer that sparked a 12-4 run. The Lancers led by six points or more for the next 4:33 before back-to-back turnovers helped Asheville bring Longwood's lead down to two. The Lancers extended their lead back to four before a 3-pointer from Connor Dubsky, followed by a layup from Taylor, helped Asheville take the lead 68-67. This, however, would be the only lead for the Bulldogs in the second half, as Longwood responded with a 14-3 run and took a 10-point lead with 1:30 to go.

Marsh led Asheville with 15 points, going 6-11 from the field. Taylor followed with 14 points, going 6-10 from the field, Banks had 12 points, and Solomon had 10. Banks led Asheville with three 3-pointers. Greg Gantt Jr. led Asheville under the rim with seven boards, while Solomon had six. Solomon led the team with four assists, and Marsh followed with three.

Asheville dominated Longwood in the paint, as the Bulldogs outscored the Lancers 40-28. The Bulldogs also outscored Longwood on turnovers (16-14), fast breaks (17-5) and off the bench (27-12). Longwood outscored Asheville 26-2 following second chance points, as Longwood finished the night with 48 rebounds, 24 offensive and 24 defensive, and Asheville finished with 23 total rebounds.

The Bulldogs shot 53.7% from the field, while Longwood shot 38.7%. Asheville was 6-20 from 3-point range (30%) while Longwood was 8-26 (30.8%). The Lancers had 39 attempts from the free throw line and made 29 of their shots, while Asheville was 12-16 from the charity stripe.

The Bulldogs are back on the road this Saturday (Jan. 11) as they head to Presbyterian for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
