Men and Women Both Place Second at Brevard XC Classic

BREVARD, N.C. - The UNC Asheville cross country team had a strong showing at the Brevard XC Classic this Saturday (Sept. 20), as both the men and women earned second-place finishes. 

Both teams finished second behind Milligan University, which was ranked No.1 (men) and No.2 (women) in the NAIA Cross Country Coaches Top 25 preseason poll.

In a field of 50 runners, the women's team packed up early on then pushed individually in the later stages of the race. A trio of Bulldogs achieved personal bests over the two-lap course. In her opening race of the season, sophomore Zoe Bos led the Bulldogs with a 10th-place finish in a personal best time of 19:30.7. Freshman Nikole Baikova placed 16th (19:58.9) in her first collegiate 5k race. Following Baikova was Lauren Sochia (20th- 20:39.4), Hanna Guyton (22nd- 21:06.5), Maddie Hamuka (25th- 21:34.4, PR), Ashley Keazer (26th- 21:45.4) and Payton Murphy (27th- 21:53.0). 

On the men's side, four Bulldogs secured personal bests, and five Bulldogs finished in the top half of the 65-runner field. Sophomore Nate Sullivan led the charge, placing 17th with his time of 26:47.8. He was followed by Tadiyos Sloan-Westmoreland (19th- 27:17.7), Lance Surles (24th- 27:34.6., PR), Jacoby Ennis (25th- 27:41.2), Noah Jones (28th- 27:50.4) and Hank Neal (34th- 28:53.9). 

The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday, Oct. 5, for the Live in Lou Classic in Louisville, Kentucky.
