Bulldogs Blank VMI for Sunday Non-Conference Win

09.01.2024 | Men's Soccer

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Men's Soccer blanked VMI 3-0 for a non-conference win at Greenwood Field on Sunday (Sept. 1).

After outlasting an hour-plus weather delay, the Bulldogs wasted no time getting on the board. Edvin Grolimund put a shot on cage within the first 30 seconds, having it deflect right out to Tyler Leonard who scored his first career goal in the first minute of his first career start. The Bulldogs struck less than three minutes later, when Louis Beckett and Seth Hammond repeated virtually the same sequence to put the Bulldogs up 2-0. Beckett put a shot on net that was deflected down to Hammond, who stashed home the rebound for his first of the season and the second of his Asheville career. The Bulldogs would minimize pressure on their back end in the first half, with Charlie Farrar making three saves in the first 45 minutes as the Bulldogs took the lead to the half.

Asheville would bring the match to its final score with a third goal in the 59th minute, set up by a ball into the box from Myles Edmondson. Edmondson's ball found the foot of Louis Beckett, who put home his second of the season. VMI made Charlie Farrar and Ian McGill stand tall in the second half, but Asheville held on for its first shutout of the season.

Asheville out-shot VMI 30-11 in the match, including 13-6 in shots on target. Asheville also outworked VMI 11-2 on corner kicks, while holding VMI without a corner kick in the first half. Hammond led Asheville with a career-high five shots in the match, while Beckett had a career-high four and Michael Wilkerson and Rinta Takagi each had a career-high three. Leonard, Brendan Herb, Aysa Hamid, Edmonson and Grolimund each had two. Keegan Peat and Benian Yao each had one shot, while Farrar collected his first shutout and second win of the season with six saves. McGill played the final nine and a half minutes between the pipes.

The (2-1-0) Bulldogs are back in action next Saturday (Sept. 7) at Bellarmine in non-conference action. Kickoff is set for 2:00 p.m. from Louisville, Ky., with video and live stats available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
