ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville men's soccer edged Stetson for a 3-1 win to open the 2024 season Friday night (Aug. 23) at Greenwood Field. The win marks five straight wins in the home opener of the season dating back to 2019 for the Bulldogs.
Â
Aysa Hamid got the scoring started in the 31st minute, after drawing a foul just outside the box. Hamid bent a right-footer to the low left corner for his first of the season and fifth of his career to give the Bulldogs a 1-0 lead that they would take to the half.
Â
Asheville would stretch its lead in the 59th minute, when a stretch pass sent Rinta Takagi into the box crashing hard. He was taken down to draw a penalty, setting up a Michael Wilkerson penalty kick. The Asheville native buried his second career penalty kick and his second goal in a Bulldog uniform to stretch the lead to 2-0. Stetson responded with a goal in the 79th minute to cut into the deficit, when Charlie Rutt headed home a cross into the box from Charlie Ahl set up by a foul and a free kick. Asheville was resilient in their response however, as Louis Beckett scored literally 10 seconds later off a long ball into the box by Edvin Grolimund. Asheville stood tall defensively to defend home field for the win.
