Brianna Moore Jumps for Gold on First Day of Big South Championships

HIGH POINT, N.C. Brianna Moore jumped for gold, Mallory Haney leads in the heptathlon, and seven individuals qualified for finals on day one to highlight the UNC Asheville track and field team at the Big South Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships on Monday.

MONDAY FINALS

In the long jump, Moore jumped a personal best 6.14m to secure the Bulldogs' first event victory. Moore is No. 2 in program history in the long jump. 

The top finals finishes following Moore's came from Yates Hockaday, Madeline Wittschen, and Sophie Lundin in the 10,000m. Hockaday finished sixth at 32:19.76. Wittschen finished seventh in a personal best time of 37:35.47, and Lundin finished eighth in a time of 37:41.14. Dylan Major joined Hockaday in the 10,000 and finished 10th in 33:31.06. 

Jaelyn Arnold and Madison Hannah finished 18th and 19th in the women's hammer. Arnold threw a personal best 42.00m, and Hannah threw 39.01m. 

In the men's long jump final, Gabe Matthews finished ninth with a PR distance of 6.36 meters. He was joined in the event by Mason Bradley, who placed 13th with a distance of 5.60 meters. In the men's pole vault, Eli Oeschger placed fifth with a personal best of 3.80 meters. 

MONDAY QUALIFIERS 

Only the top 12 in the 1500m qualified for the finals on Wednesday, and Asheville had two men and one woman make it to the finals. The 1500m event had a successful showing for Asheville, with three Bulldogs qualifying for the finals on Wednesday. On the men's side, Alex Haines qualified with a third-place finish at 3:59.47, and Brock Newsome qualified at 4:02.05. In the women's section, Isabel Richardson made it through to the finals with her second-place finish, with a time of 4:43.05. 

In the men's 400m hurdle prelims, Zac Weas and Adam Graham qualified for the finals on Wednesday, with Weas finishing sixth (56.80) and Graham finishing 8th (56.98). 

DaMarr Harvey and Jalen Anderson finished neck and neck to qualify for the finals of the men's 200m. Harvey finished fourth, and Anderson finished fifth, with times of 21.21 and 21.46, respectively.

MONDAY MULTIS

After day one of the heptathlon, Mallory Haney is first with 3039 points. She placed first in the 100m hurdles with a season's best of 14.39, first in the high jump with a personal best jump of 1.56 meters, fifth in the shot put (9.59 meters), and first in the 200m (24.61, PR). Lee Kania is sixth with 2351 points, and Maya Dulaney is 10th with 1811 points.

In the men's decathlon, Adam Graham is seventh with 2492 points, and Eli Oeschger is eighth with 2413 points. Graham finished second in the men's 400m final with a time of 50.90. 

Day two of the Big South Conference Championships will begin today, May 7, with the decathlon starting at 12 p.m. Live results will be available HERE.
