Baseball Drops Series Finale to High Point on Sunday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. -Â UNC Asheville Baseball dropped its Big South Conference series finale to visiting High Point on Sunday (Apr. 7) at Greenwood Field by a score of 5-2.
High Point struck first in the second for a 1-0 lead, holding the Bulldogs off the scoreboard until the fifth inning. Brock Mercado reached on a fielding error with two outs, before Kohl Abrams drew a walk to push him to second. Ty Kaufman would tie the game with a single up the middle to score Mercado unearned, before Asheville would turn in a clean top half of the sixth and take a 2-1 lead in the home half. Back-to-back one-out singles by Corbin Lanowitz and Cameron Johnson put two runners on for the Bulldogs, before Canon Pierce stepped into the box as a pinch hitter. Pierce lofted a ball that fell down the left field line, leaving him with a stand-up double while Lanowitz scored and Johnson moved to third. High Point rallied for two runs in the top of the seventh, before bringing the game to its final score with two runs in the top of the ninth.
Burnett and Lanowitz each registered two hits in the game, while Kaufman, Johnson, Pierce, Mercado and Abrams each had one. Kaufman and Pierce each drove in one run in the game, while Lanowitz and Mercado each scored one run. Cole Schiff pieced together a solid start for the Bulldogs, allowing just one run on eight hits through 4.2 innings with two walks and four strikeouts. Justin Needles (2-1) was hung with the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing two runs on two hits in 2.1 innings of relief with four strikeouts. Isaac Gonzales picked up one out in relief of Needles, while Shea Walker tossed 1.1 innings in relief of Gonzales. Nic Melton and Jacob Strmiska pieced together the ninth inning for Asheville.
