Bulldogs Sink Buccaneers in Overtime on Homecoming Saturday

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball sunk visiting Charleston Southern on Homecoming Saturday (Feb. 17) 68-63 in overtime inside Kimmel Arena.

Charleston Southern built an early six-point lead en route to a 14-9 lead after the first quarter. Asheville responded by winning the second quarter 17-13 as Charleston Southern led 27-26 at the half.

Charleston Southern built its lead up to nine in the quarter, before Asheville rallied to tie the game at 20 with a run just past the halfway point. The teams traded scores and the lead from that point until the break.

Charleston Southern outscored Asheville 19-16 in a fast-paced third quarter, maintaining a lead for the entire 10-minute period. The Buccaneers took a 46-42 lead to the fourth quarter.

Asheville responded in the fourth quarter holding Charleston Southern to just 12 points, using a pair of clutch Jaila Lee free throws to tie the game at 58 and head to the extra session for just the second time on the season. The teams played to a 52-52 tie with under three and a half minutes to play, before Asheville built a four-point lead on back-to-back scoring possessions. Charleston Southern responded to go ahead 58-56 with just 18 seconds left, before Lee drew a foul and knocked down a pair of free throws to send the game to overtime tied at 58.

The teams were tied at 60 halfway through the overtime period, before a jumper from Lee and a huge three-pointer from Faith Adams vaulted the Bulldogs ahead by five. Asheville was able to use the
momentum to defend its home floor and seal the victory.

Asheville shot 41.8 percent (28-67) from the field, just 17.6 percent (3-17) from long range and 75.0 percent (9-12) from the foul line in the game. Asheville also outscored Charleston Southern 16-10 off turnovers, while scoring 30 points in the paint, seven points each off second chances and fast breaks and eight points off the bench. McKinley Brooks-Sumpter finished with a game-high 20 points, her sixth 20-plus point effort of the season. Mallory Bruce continued her recent tear chipping in 18 points, while Lee also added 11. Abigail Wilson added eight points, while Jamaya Blanks had four and Adams had three. Nycerra Minnis and Dakota McCaughan each contributed two points in the game. Bruce led the effort on the glass with eight rebounds, while Lee and Wilson each had seven and Brooks-Sumpter also grabbed four. Blanks added two in the game, while Adams also had one. Brooks-Sumpter, Adams and McCaughan each dished out a team-high three assists in the game, while Lee had two and Bruce, Blanks and Minnis each had one in the game. Brooks-Sumpter notched a new career-high with five steals, while Lee and Bruce each had one. Brooks-Sumpter also posted two blocks, while Minnis and Wilson each had one.

The Bulldogs return to action on Wednesday (Feb. 21) hosting Longwood in Big South Conference action. Tip-off is set for 6:30 p.m. from Kimmel Arena with video, live stats and audio available at www.uncabulldogs.com.
