Women's Basketball Battles, but Falls to Furman Wednesday Night

ASHEVILLE, N.C. - UNC Asheville Women's Basketball battled but fell to Furman Wednesday night (Dec. 11) by a score of 68-50 inside Kimmel Arena. Â

Furman jumped out to an early first quarter lead including a 10-1 run to open the game through four minutes and change as they led 16-6 after 10 minutes of play.

The Dogs cut into the lead throughout the second quarter scoring 12 to Furman's 16 in the period, but Furman eventually took a 32-18 lead to the half.

Furman stretched the lead further in the third quarter, outscoring Asheville 23-13 in the period.

Asheville would respond in the fourth quarter playing inspired basketball outscoring Furman 19-13 in the period, paced by a 10-point run by LaImani Simmons over a four-minute span. Ultimately Furman would bring the game to its final score.

Asheville shot 34.4 percent (21-61) from the field in the game including just 12.5 percent (2-16) from three-point range and 75 percent (6-8) from the charity stripe. Asheville scored 11 points off turnovers, 28 points in the paint, five points off second chances, eight points off fast breaks and 10 points off the bench in the game. Simmons paced the Bulldogs with a game and season-high 19 points just two off her career-high, while Abigail Wilson notched her third consecutive double-figure scoring effort with 12 points in her 75th career start as a Bulldog. Sydney Burris also added 10 points off the bench for the Bulldogs, while Taylor Wilkins had six and Dakota McCaughan had three. Burris led the Bulldogs with nine rebounds in the game, while Wilson added six to move closer to 17th on Asheville's all-time career rebounding list. Alana Swift grabbed five rebounds in the game, while McCaughan had three and Simmons, Wilkins and Skylar Bailey each had one. McCaughan dished out four assists in the game to pace the team, while Burris added three for a new career-high. Wilson, Wilkins and Bailey each had two helpers apiece, while Simmons and Swift each had one. Wilkins, McCaughan, Bailey and Burris each had two steals in the game with Bailey and Burris each tying a career-high, while Swift also recorded one steal in the game. Burris led the Bulldogs with a career-best three blocks in the game.
