ROCK HILL, S.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team traveled to Winthrop on Saturday and fell to the Eagles in three sets (25-8, 25-20, 25-15).
Ana Djurovic led Asheville with 10 kills, followed by Kylie Cackovic with nine. Payton Rolfsen had 24 assists and two aces. Michelle Thao had 12 digs, followed by Rolfsen with eight and Djurovic with seven.
Asheville led 6-4 in the opening frame before Winthrop responded with four points. A kill from Cackovic made it a one-point set, but Winthrop responded by scoring 17 points and only allowing the Bulldogs to score one.
In the second set, Winthrop jumped out to an 11-7 lead, and the Bulldogs responded by scoring the following four points to tie the set at 11. This would be as close as Asheville would get, as Winthrop answered with two points and led the rest of the set.
Winthrop's dominance carried into the final frame as the Eagles opened the set on an 8-1 run and never let up to complete the 3-set sweep.
The Bulldogs will be back in action for the final week of Big South Regular Season play with two matches against USC Upstate. The first match is Tuesday, November 12, in the G.B. Hodge Center, and the last match is Saturday, November 16, in the Justice Center. Asheville's Nov. 16 match will be the team's senior day.
