Volleyball Falls in Three Sets to Winthrop

ASHEVILLE, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team faced Winthrop in the Justice Center Tuesday evening and fell to the Eagles in three sets (25-23, 25-18, 25-18).
The Eagles outkilled Asheville 45-32 and finished with a .237 attack percentage, with Asheville finishing with a .147.
Kylie Cackovic led the Bulldogs with 12 kills, Payton Rolfsen had 19 assists, and Michelle Thao had 13 digs. Megan Oppegard had three service aces.
The first set featured 15 ties and three lead changes. Asheville was two points away from securing an opening-set victory when, out of a timeout, Winthrop closed the set on a 4-0 run to take the opening frame.
Tied at three in the second frame, a 7-0 run from Winthrop put the Eagles ahead 10-3, and the Bulldogs were unable to respond as Winthrop was able to extend its lead to double-digits. Asheville went on a 3-0 run with Winthrop ahead by nine, but a Bulldog attack error helped Winthrop win the second frame.
In the final frame, Winthrop jumped out to a 7-3 lead and never looked back to earn the match sweep.
UP NEXT
Asheville will conclude the road portion of its conference schedule this weekend. The Bulldogs travel to Gardner-Webb on Friday, Nov. 8, for a 6 p.m. match and Winthrop on Saturday, Nov. 9, for a 5 p.m. match.
