Volleyball Drops Match to Panthers

HIGH POINT, N.C. – The UNC Asheville volleyball team traveled to face High Point University Friday evening and fell to the Panthers in three sets (25-18, 25-22, 25-18).
The opening frame was back and forth as the set featured nine ties and four lead changes. A kill from Avery Loeback tied the score at 11 before the Panthers went on an 8-1 run. The Bulldogs brought the score back within two with a 4-0 run, sparked by a kill from Albertine van der Goot (20-18), but High Point closed the set out with the final five points.
The second frame was another close set as the two teams were locked up eight times. Trailing 10-8, Asheville went on a 4-0 run to move ahead 12-10. High Point quickly responded by tying the set at 12 and regaining the lead 14-13. Asheville would not move back into the lead for the remainder of the set and went on to drop the second frame 25-22.
A kill and a service ace would help Asheville to an early 2-0 lead to open the final set before High Point responded with the following five points. The Panthers worked their lead out to double-digits (20-10), and Asheville was unable to perform the comeback.
Asheville combined for 31 kills with Kylie Cackovic leading the way with nine, followed by Albertine van der Goot with eight. Michelle Thao had 12 digs followed by Cackovic with eight. Riley Barr led the team with 13 assists and Payton Rolfsen had 10.
The Bulldogs will return to the court tomorrow, Saturday, Oct. 25, as Asheville faces Radford at 2 p.m.
